We'll turn it around... 9/26 Update

Okay so our first game was a good learning opportunity. We’ll focus on more game-type scenarios during practice and get all the kids more comfortable being on the field. One parent mentioned it might be a good idea to have the kids sit separately from their parents. I love this idea. I’ll be bringing the blanket from practice to the games and we’ll make that the place for them to sit. I’d also like to have one parent (Amber?) to ensure the kids stay seated and for the other parents to hang back and just focus on cheering and encouraging the team.

Please continue to tell them what a good job they are doing and drive home that we’re here to have fun. Last year my son’s team came a long way from the first game to the last- I know ours will to. Now that I can see that 3 – 4 year olds can “do more” we’ll work harder at practice to bring up their skill level. Having said that, we've got some young 3 year olds and there will be some old 4 year olds so the level of ability is just going to be different from team to team.

We’ll get there,
Coach Kristy
Go Titans!!!

  • It was their first game, they just need some practice! A few of the kids have never played before, but will pick it up with a little more practice. I don't think Caitlin yet gets the object of the game, she just thinks everyone's taking "her ball", maybe we can work more on that at practice.

  • Yeah I think they'll end up loving it.

That's funny that she thinks everyone is taking her ball- it never occurred to me that they would think that but it makes total sense.

I got some great pictures of the kiddos, I hope to post them tonight. Tomorrows practice will be alot of fun and we'll work more "on the field". I'd like to have them go by themselves down the field and then "score". In the very least the practice will be a feel good time for them. But after that (when everyone has a turn) we'll do some one on one, two on two, etc. We'll see how it goes.

Sure I would love to help out. Just let me know what you need me to do and I will do it.
I am with Caitlin's Mom, this is Trevor's first experience with sports, it will just take sometime.
Maybe when we have them do these little drills at practice one of us can actually perform the task, so they can get a good idea of what they need to do.
Then even split them up into a mini team to go against each other, so we can talk them through it.
I THINK IT IS JUST FUN!!

  • It is fun, Amber I totally agree. I get such a kick out of being there for our lil' ones. Them having this time to shine means so much. I guess I like the idea of no distractions from the outside world- I mean when we're at the game or at practice- it is all about them and that is a good good thing.

Anyway, I'm brushing up on the terms and getting a better feeling for the "rules" but on actually performing the drills- well I never was great at soccer :)

Maybe this is where we can get the parents involved? The kids would get a kick out of that huh? I can see it now, Mom or Dad up there showing them how to pass the ball, how to stop it, or how to throw it in. That might bring the kiddos out of their shells more, if Mom (or Dad) isn't scared to get up in front of everyone... or even if Mom (or Dad) isn't perfect then it is okay if I'm not.

  • I agree with Caitlin's mom I think they will eventually get better each week. I know this is Bryce's first time to play soccer, and I'm sure alot of the others, he just expects to have the ball all the time I don't think he quite understands yet. I think letting them practice more 2 on 2 or 3 on 3 may help, then maybe they will get the object of the game better. Maybe the parent idea is good also.

  • I am thrilled that you'all are commenting on the blog- the input is so useful.

Bryce is really close to "getting" soccer- I know he is going to especially love it once the concept is better understood. He does really well controlling the ball- it won’t be long before he’s driving it down the field. We'll get there.

We would'nt mind trying to get together I think that is probably a good idea. Bryce usually warms up pretty quick onc e he gets to know the other kids and I have noticed he is still a bit shy. So it may be good for him too.
